SPAL 16" Pusher Fan

Part Number: VA18 - AP10/C - 41S

After fitting the larger turbo charger the housing for the radiator fan was touching the compressor housing of the turbo charger. I managed to bend the radiator housing to clear but I wasn't entirely happy with the solution. The radiator housing didn't fit properly on the new radiator because there are several different fan and housing combinations on the Coupe. I could only attach three of the four bolts. It looked strange having a twin fan housing with only a single fan in the lower housing.

I decided to fit a pusher fan in front of the radiator. This would tidy up the appearance and also provide plenty of room for larger turbo chargers or a different exhaust manifold in the future. SPAL makes very slim radiator fans. I measured the size of the core of the radiator and determined that a 16" fan would fit.

It's not central across the width of the radiator as the motor of the fan is right behind the front structural support of the car. By the bonnet catch there is a slight reduction in available space so the fan's motor is positioned right in the middle of the bonnet catch to optimize the available depth. By carefully rotating the fan it was possible to line up two of it's mounting holes with the metal support strips at the top and bottom of the radiator.

I'm hoping that the fan will be as good as the original. It's larger, 16" as opposed to 12" and the old fan only partially covered the radiator. However pushing the air isn't as efficient as pulling it and the motor doesn't look like it draws as much current as the original.

Even though this new fan is only 2.05" thick it still didn't quite fit between the radiator and the car's structural support. It needed about an extra 10mm. At the top of the radiator this was easy, I used an extra set of the thick rubber washers that are used to hold the radiator to the slam panel. I noticed that the lower support for the radiator wasn't straight, it had a slight bow in it and further more could be turned around. Therefore I turned the support around and this moved the radiator back enough for it to easily clear. The undertray mounting arms had to be cut off and welded onto the other side.

I also had to cut off the old plug from the wiring harness and connect on a weather proof plug and socket. I had to make up a new housing for the twin speed resister and mount it on the car's structural support to the side of the radiator.

This is the technical data for the fan.
