LED Rear Lights

I bought the LED rear lights from CoupeTeile in Germany. I went for the Super-Set where both the top and bottom lights have an outer ring of LEDs which act as both side lights and brake lights.

They are comprised of custom alloy mounting rings and Hella 55mm Modular components:

The instructions are quite confusing as they refer to the colours on the Coupe loom that go into the sockets, not the colours of the wires on the plugs. I didn't want to permanently wire in my lights so I cut off the bulbs from the ends of the original wires and connected the leads from the LED lights to the plugs. Therefore they plug into the Coupe loom just like the originals.

The Coupe has two plugs, a grey one for the brake and side lights and a yellow one for the fog/reverse and indicators. On the yellow plug the yellow wire is the indicator and the red wire is the fog/reverse. The black wire is ground. On the grey plug the orange wire is the side light and the white wire is the brake light. Again the black wire is ground.

On the LED lights the brown wire is the ground. The red wire is the central light (indicator/fog/reverse), the black wire is the side light and the white wire is the brake light.

Use the wiring diagram below to connect the LED lights to the grey and yellow plugs.

As you can see there are three wires that need to pass between the two sets of lights. This is because the indicator wire from the yellow plug needs to now go to the centre of the upper LED. The side and brake light wires from the grey plug now also need to go to the lower LED bulbs. I didn't want to have these permanently connected as I wouldn't be able to remove the lights from the car without having to cut the wires. Therefore I bought a 3 pin weatherproof plug/socket and joined the wires together using this. Ignore the bullet connectors in the picture below on the red wire. With the aid of another lead these allow me to swap the reverse/fog lights over when driving on the opposite side of the road. After this picture was taken I finished wrapping up the wires using electrical insulation tape.

This is what the car looks like with the lights fitted. Once the wiring was completed they were very easy to fit.

With the side lights on.
